Curaçao Preparing New Law to Improve Safety in Schools

Local, | By Correspondent June 4, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government has begun preparations for new legislation aimed at improving safety in and around schools as part of a broader overhaul of the island’s education system.

According to the implementation agenda and progress report of the Landspakket Curaçao, the proposed law is intended to help reduce incidents of violence on school grounds and in surrounding areas. The initiative was highlighted in the latest reporting on reforms being carried out under the agreement between Curaçao and the Netherlands.

The school safety legislation forms part of the wider Mehorashon di Enseñansa (Improvement of Education) program, which seeks to strengthen the quality and effectiveness of education across the island.

In addition to measures focused on school safety, the government is also working on several other education-related laws. These include new regulations for special primary education and reforms designed to modernize the legal framework governing the education sector.

Authorities have not yet released specific details about the contents of the proposed school safety law. However, the initiative reflects growing attention to creating safer learning environments for students, teachers, and school staff.

The broader education reform package is expected to be implemented gradually, with the introduction of the updated legislation currently planned for the first quarter of 2027.

The school safety initiative is one of several reforms included in the Landspakket, which aims to strengthen governance, public services, and institutional development in Curaçao.
