WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government wants to speed up the publication of its national terrorism sanctions list by using the island's digital publication system instead of waiting for the weekly edition of the Official Gazette.
Under the proposed changes, individuals and organizations suspected of involvement in terrorism can be placed on a national sanctions list, allowing authorities to freeze their assets while prohibiting banks and businesses from providing them with financial services.
Currently, additions to or removals from the list are published through the Landscourant, which is issued only once a week. The government now proposes using the digital Publicatieblad so that changes can be published immediately.
The proposal also introduces a formal procedure allowing individuals or organizations to request removal from the terrorism list. International evaluators had previously concluded that Curaçao lacked clear rules governing such requests.
The measures form part of a broader effort to strengthen the island's compliance with international anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards.
