Curaçao Parliament Unanimously Approves Civil Service Reform

Local, | By Correspondent February 11, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Parliament has unanimously passed amendments to the National Ordinance on Civil Administrative Organisation, a key step towards modernising the structure of the public sector. The vote came after a parliamentary session that resumed on Wednesday following a suspension since November.

During the resumed debate, Justice Minister Shalten Hato (MFK) was given the opportunity to respond to extensive questions from legislators collected during both the first and second rounds of discussion. MPs raised several critical points about the proposed changes, prompting additional clarification from the minister before the final vote.

After a brief procedural break to address remaining issues, the proposal received full political support and was adopted without any opposing votes. The legislation aims to modernise the administrative and managerial framework of Curaçao’s civil service, aligning it with current governance needs and practices.

The reform is expected to provide a more effective and efficient public sector, though details on implementation and timelines are likely to come in future government communications. Lawmakers noted that the revisions were overdue and necessary to ensure the civil administrative apparatus can meet evolving demands.

The session marked a rare moment of unity in Parliament, with members across the political spectrum endorsing the changes following what legislative leaders described as “thorough review and discussion.”
