WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Parliament will hold two separate question sessions on October 1 focusing on three major public concerns: power outages and load shedding, the fire and smoke problems at the Malpais landfill, and the financial situation of the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC).
The first session is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and will focus on electricity outages and load shedding on Curaçao. The Minister of General Affairs has been called to Parliament to answer questions on the issue. The session follows a request submitted on August 18 by Member of Parliament Steven Croes Camelia-Römer.
The issue has gained particular importance as Curaçao has experienced problems with electricity supply and the government and utility company Aqualectra have faced questions about the reliability and capacity of the power system.
One hour later, at 3:00 p.m., Parliament will turn its attention to two issues falling under the responsibility of the Minister of Health, Environment and Nature.
The first concerns the fire at the Malpais landfill, the resulting smoke and the possible consequences for surrounding neighborhoods. The second concerns the financial situation of Curaçao Medical Center and the structural financing of the hospital.
The parliamentary documents show that the session was convened following two separate requests. MP Jerrol D. J. Seferina submitted a request on September 11 concerning the Malpais issue, while MP Giselle McWilliam submitted another request on September 17 concerning CMC's finances.
The inclusion of CMC’s “financial situation and structural financing” means the discussion is expected to go beyond the hospital's immediate financial position and address how Curaçao intends to finance its principal hospital on a sustainable basis.
Meanwhile, the Malpais discussion will place the environmental and public-health consequences of the landfill back before Parliament. Lawmakers are seeking answers concerning the fire, smoke emissions and the potential impact on residents living in neighboring areas.
Both question sessions will take place in the Parliament meeting hall at Wilhelminaplein 4 in Willemstad.
The October 1 agenda will therefore bring three essential public services under parliamentary scrutiny on the same afternoon: the reliability of Curaçao's electricity supply, the health and environmental risks surrounding the country's main landfill, and the long-term financial viability of its principal hospital.
