WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao Parliament plans to allocate nearly 30 million guilders for its 2027 budget, with major investments proposed for a future parliament building as well as expanded media productions, public branding, and communication activities.
The 2027 budget was approved on May 6 by the Central Committee of Parliament and has since been submitted to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas.
According to the budget documents, Parliament is requesting a total of 21.4 million guilders under the ordinary budget and an additional 8.37 million guilders under the capital budget.
A significant portion of the planned investments concerns the future housing of Parliament. Lawmakers are once again reserving 7.5 million guilders for the renovation, restoration, or possible construction of a new البرلمان building. The final decision will depend on the recommendations of the temporary committee overseeing the new parliament building project.
In addition to infrastructure spending, Parliament is seeking to significantly increase its public visibility and communication efforts. The budget includes 585,000 guilders for public information campaigns and media-related activities.
According to the documents, the funds will be used for professional video productions, television programs, social media content, livestreams of parliamentary meetings, and the launch of a youth-oriented website scheduled for 2026.
The budget also emphasizes what Parliament describes as “institutional profiling.” Additional funding is being reserved for trade fair stands, school visits, banners, merchandise, and other promotional tools aimed particularly at reaching younger audiences.
The documents further show that Parliament currently consists of 67 paid positions, including 21 members of Parliament, 14 faction staff members, and 32 employees working for the parliamentary clerk’s office.
Travel costs also remain substantial. More than 924,000 guilders have been budgeted for transportation, travel, and accommodation expenses for members of Parliament and staff. According to the explanation attached to the budget, the estimates take into account rising international prices linked to geopolitical developments.
In the budget proposal, Parliament also stresses its financial autonomy and asks the government not to make any modifications to the parliamentary budget without prior consultation with the legislature.
