Local, International, | By Press release June 22, 2026

KANSAS CITY – Curaçao Parliament President Fergino Brownbill was among the dignitaries present at Curaçao's historic World Cup match against Ecuador in Kansas City, where the island nation secured its first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup.

Brownbill described the occasion as a source of great pride and honor for Curaçao, noting that the national team once again captured the admiration and respect of football fans around the world through its performance against the South American side.

The Parliament President congratulated both the players and the people of Curaçao on the achievement, highlighting the team's determination and the exceptional performance of goalkeeper Elroy Room, who played a crucial role in securing the scoreless draw and was later named Player of the Match.

Before kickoff, Brownbill had the opportunity to meet and speak with King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who attended the match together with Queen Máxima and Princess Ariane to support Curaçao during its World Cup campaign.

During his visit, Brownbill also held discussions with several international dignitaries and political leaders who were present at the stadium. Among them were Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Chicago Eric Strating, and U.S. Congressman Tracey Mann.

According to Brownbill, his meeting with Congressman Mann, who represents Kansas' First Congressional District, was particularly productive. The two discussed Curaçao's World Cup achievements, developments within the island nation, and potential areas for future cooperation at the legislative level.

Among the topics raised was the possibility of developing a more structured relationship with members of the U.S. Congress, similar to arrangements that Aruba has established in the past.

The meetings took place against the backdrop of one of the most significant moments in Curaçao's sporting history, as the national football team continued to make its mark on the world stage while also creating opportunities for diplomatic and political engagement.

For many Curaçaoans, the draw against Ecuador represented not only a sporting achievement but also a moment of national unity and international visibility, with political leaders, members of the Dutch Royal Family and foreign officials joining supporters in celebrating the island's success.
