WILLEMSTAD – Members of the Curaçao Parliament are expected to travel to Bonaire next month to participate in events marking the opening of the new parliamentary year of the Bonaire Island Council and the celebration of Bonaire Day.
The Curaçao Parliament approved participation in the visit during its meetings this week.
According to the official agenda of the Bonaire Island Council, the ceremonial public meeting opening the 2026–2027 council year will take place on Saturday, September 5, at the Passangrahan. The session is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
The following morning, Sunday, September 6, the Island Council will hold another ceremonial public meeting as part of Dia di Boneiru, or Bonaire Day. That meeting is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.
Participation by Curaçao parliamentarians reflects the institutional ties between the Dutch Caribbean islands and provides an opportunity for elected representatives to maintain contacts with their counterparts on Bonaire.
Bonaire Day is celebrated annually on September 6 and is one of the island’s principal official celebrations. Government institutions, community organizations and residents traditionally participate in activities surrounding the occasion.
The September 5 ceremony, meanwhile, formally marks the beginning of the Island Council’s new parliamentary year.
The Island Council is Bonaire’s elected representative body and performs a role comparable at the local level to that of a municipal council in the European Netherlands.
The Curaçao delegation’s visit therefore combines an official parliamentary engagement with participation in one of Bonaire’s most important annual celebrations.
