Curaçao Parliament Creates Committee to Prepare 90th Anniversary Commemoration

Local, | By Correspondent October 9, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Parliament will establish a temporary committee to prepare activities commemorating the legislature’s 90th anniversary in 2028, with a focus on the island’s parliamentary history and the development of democracy.

The anniversary refers to April 5, 1938, when the then-colonial Parliament met for the first time. According to the decision establishing the committee, that year marked an important step toward the development of a fully functioning parliamentary democracy.

The Temporary Committee for the Commemoration of 90 Years of Parliament will officially begin its work on January 1, 2027, and will consist of five members.

The committee will have two years to prepare the anniversary. Its mandate includes developing proposals for how Curaçao should commemorate 90 years of parliamentary history and reflect on the development of democracy on the island.

The proposals must be submitted to Parliament’s Central Committee no later than the end of December 2028.

Parliament has also established a separate temporary committee responsible for selecting recipients and organizing the presentation of parliamentary distinctions.

The committee will oversee the Martin di Oro and Kokolishi Papiadó awards, which recognize individuals who, according to Parliament, have made exceptional contributions to Curaçao’s democratic rule of law and society.

This committee will consist of the President of Parliament and four members, with one representative from each parliamentary faction. Unlike the anniversary committee, it will remain active throughout the current parliamentary term.
