Curaçao Opens New School Year With Focus on Innovation and Special Education Reform

Local, | By Correspondent August 21, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao officially opened the new 2026–2027 school year on Thursday, with the government placing greater emphasis on educational innovation, improved school environments and the professional development of teachers.

The government wants to use the new academic year to further strengthen the quality of education and create learning environments that better respond to the needs of students and educators.

A major development is expected next week. On August 28, the Curaçao Parliament is scheduled to debate the new National Ordinance on Special Primary Education (Landsverordening Speciaal Funderend Onderwijs).

The legislation is intended to provide a stronger and more structured framework for children with special educational needs and to promote equal educational opportunities.

Under the proposed reform, greater attention will be given to ensuring that children who require additional support receive education that better matches their individual needs.

Special education has become an increasingly important issue on Curaçao as schools face growing demand for specialized assistance and appropriate educational placements.

The August 28 parliamentary debate will therefore mark an important step in determining how special primary education will be organized and strengthened in the coming years.

Alongside the proposed legislation, the government says improving school facilities and investing in teachers will remain important priorities during the new academic year.

The broader objective is to create an education system that is more inclusive, better equipped and capable of providing appropriate opportunities for all children, including those who require specialized support.
