ORANJESTAD – Improving digital connectivity in Curaçao has been identified as a key development priority, with plans for a new transatlantic subsea cable highlighted during the OCT-EU Forum in Aruba.

State Secretary Eric van der Burg pointed to the project as a critical step in strengthening the island’s economic resilience and integration with global networks.

The proposed cable would directly link Curaçao to Europe, improving internet capacity, reliability, and speed. According to Van der Burg, such investments are essential for supporting digital transformation and economic diversification.

The project forms part of a broader list of priorities for Caribbean territories, including infrastructure, energy, and logistics developments across the region.

Van der Burg stressed that these initiatives require stronger cooperation with the European Union, particularly in ensuring that funding mechanisms are accessible to smaller islands.

He noted that improved connectivity is not only a technical issue but also a strategic one, positioning Curaçao as a more competitive and resilient economy in the region.
