WILLEMSTAD – Het Curaçaosch Museum will host a free evening dedicated to the traditional stories of Kompa Nanzi on Thursday, September 24, as part of Kurashi’s monthly “Bou’i Pal’i Tamarein” series.
The event, “Kuenta nan di Kompa Nanzi,” will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. beneath one of the large tamarind trees in the museum garden.
Storytellers Jeroen Heuvel and Guineta de Palm will take the audience into the world of Kompa Nanzi and explore the significance of the stories within Curaçao’s storytelling tradition.
Kompa Nanzi, the clever spider whose adventures have been passed down through generations, occupies a prominent place in Curaçao’s oral and cultural heritage. The stories are known for their humor and for portraying Nanzi as a character who often uses intelligence and cunning to overcome more powerful opponents.
Het Curaçaosch Museum regularly incorporates Kompa Nanzi into activities for children and other visitors. A large blue Nanzi spider can be found in the museum garden, while activities have included storytelling afternoons and treasure hunts in which children search for Nanzi and Shi Maria’s children.
Visitors who look carefully can also find Nanzi relaxing in a hammock in the garden’s traditional Curaçao house, where the character is portrayed as sleeping while preparing his next plans.
The September 24 event is free and open to the public. Visitors are asked to bring their own chairs, while a snack and drink will be provided.
The activity is part of the museum’s September cultural program, which focuses on Curaçao’s art, stories and cultural heritage.
