Curaçao Meteorological Department Explores Radar Upgrades to Strengthen Aviation and Weather Forecasting Services

Local, | By Correspondent October 29, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Meteorological Department is exploring new technological upgrades and maintenance improvements for its weather monitoring equipment as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen aviation safety, maritime operations and weather forecasting services for the public.

The initiative follows a working visit by a representative of Finnish weather technology company Vaisala, which supplies important meteorological equipment currently used by the department.

Vaisala engineer Esteban Garcia met with Meteorological Department Director Dr. Albert Martis and members of the department's management team to evaluate the company's services in Curaçao and discuss opportunities for future technological improvements.

The discussions focused on maintaining existing systems, upgrading equipment and identifying new technologies that could improve the accuracy and reliability of meteorological information.

The Meteorological Department has significant national and international responsibilities, including providing weather information for Curaçao International Airport, the Curaçao Flight Information Region (CUR FIR), maritime activities and the general public.

Reliable meteorological equipment is essential for carrying out these responsibilities, particularly in aviation, where accurate and timely weather observations contribute to safe aircraft operations.

Doppler Radar Installed in 2015

Curaçao has maintained a technological relationship with Vaisala for more than a decade.

In 2015, the Meteorological Department purchased a modern Doppler weather radar from the company to strengthen its weather monitoring capabilities.

Curaçao was among the first locations in the Caribbean to select Vaisala's C-band Doppler radar technology.

The radar provides meteorologists with important information about precipitation and weather systems, supporting the monitoring of changing weather conditions.

As the equipment continues to age and technology advances, the department is examining how maintenance and modernization can help preserve its operational effectiveness.

During the recent discussions, Garcia and the Meteorological Department's management team reviewed possible improvements to the existing equipment and the introduction of more advanced technology.

The department emphasized that maintaining high service standards requires continuous attention to equipment performance and technological developments.

Aviation Weather Station at Hato Airport

Another important investment was made in 2023, when the Meteorological Department purchased a specialized aviation weather station from Vaisala.

The station was installed at Hato Airport to strengthen the meteorological information provided to pilots during aircraft takeoffs and landings.

The investment was also intended to support compliance with international aviation requirements established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Accurate airport weather observations are particularly important because pilots and air traffic personnel depend on reliable meteorological information when assessing conditions for aircraft operations.

The department considers the continued modernization of these systems essential to maintaining the quality of its aviation meteorological services.

Preparing for Future Technological Developments

According to the Meteorological Department, rapid developments in weather monitoring technology make it necessary to regularly evaluate existing systems and consider future upgrades.

The discussions with Vaisala therefore focused not only on current maintenance requirements but also on identifying technological options that could strengthen the department's services in the coming years.

These efforts are intended to support the department's responsibilities across several sectors, including aviation, maritime operations and public weather information.

The department has not announced a specific budget or implementation timetable for the potential upgrades.

However, it reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining and improving its meteorological infrastructure to ensure that Curaçao continues to receive reliable weather information.

Director Martis and his management team view the cooperation with Vaisala as part of the department's broader commitment to technological development and service quality.

The Curaçao Meteorological Department stated that it will continue investing in the quality of its services to meet international standards and serve the people of Curaçao.
