WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao's recent international sporting achievements are strengthening the government's push to invest in neighborhood sports facilities, with the Pisas III Cabinet arguing that the next generation needs adequate infrastructure to develop its talent.
The government says approximately XCG 35 million has been invested in 28 sports locations over the past five years, improving facilities used by thousands of young people throughout Curaçao.
The investments have gained additional significance following a series of historic sporting accomplishments, including Curaçao's first qualification for the FIFA World Cup, Andruw Jones' election to the Baseball Hall of Fame and outstanding international performances by the island's Little League and Senior League baseball teams.
According to the government, these achievements demonstrate what Curaçao athletes can accomplish through talent, discipline, dedication and sustained development. The challenge now is to create conditions that allow more young athletes to follow similar paths.
Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas said each renovated sports facility represents an opportunity for young people and an improvement for the surrounding community.
Acting Education, Science, Culture and Sports Minister Charetti America similarly stressed the social role of sports facilities, saying they provide environments where young people learn discipline, teamwork and self-confidence.
“A good sports facility is not only a field, court or building,” America said. “It is a place where our youth learn discipline, teamwork and confidence in themselves.”
The government's approach is based partly on bringing sports infrastructure closer to residents. Renovations have therefore been spread across more than 15 neighborhoods rather than concentrated exclusively at Curaçao's major sporting complexes.
Football and baseball have received substantial attention, but investments have also covered tennis courts, gymnasiums, swimming and multifunctional sports facilities.
The government says the XCG 35 million invested in infrastructure does not include financial assistance provided for teams and athletes traveling abroad to participate in international competitions.
According to the Cabinet, investment in sports should also be viewed as an investment in public health and community development. Providing accessible facilities encourages physical activity while creating spaces where young people can participate in organized activities and develop their abilities.
The government says the renovation program will continue, with further investments planned in athletics, volleyball, baseball and football facilities as Curaçao seeks to turn its recent international sporting success into opportunities for a new generation of athletes.
