WILLEMSTAD – The passing of former Suriname president Chandrikapersad Santokhi has prompted expressions of sympathy from Curaçao’s political leadership, highlighting his role in strengthening ties between the two countries.
Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas said he received the news with deep sadness, describing Santokhi as a dedicated leader who contributed to the relationship between Curaçao and Suriname. He also referred to Santokhi as a personal friend.

Minister Shalten Hato extended his support to Santokhi’s family and the people of Suriname, emphasizing the strong connection between the two nations.
Finance Minister Charles Cooper also expressed his condolences, stating that he received the news with sorrow and is thinking of the bereaved.
Santokhi served as President of Suriname from 2020 to 2025 and was widely known for his background as a police commissioner and Minister of Justice before entering the presidency.
