WILLEMSTAD – The Justitiële Jeugd Inrichting Curaçao (JJIC), Curaçao's juvenile detention institution, is introducing additional educational and rehabilitation activities aimed at helping young offenders develop practical skills, discover their talents and prepare for a better future after leaving the institution.
The developments were discussed during a meeting involving representatives of the government auditing organization SOAB, JJIC interim director Natascha Pieter and members of the institution's staff. The meeting provided an opportunity to review recent progress and discuss upcoming improvements to the facility and its rehabilitation programs.
One of the planned improvements involves the renovation of the institution's workshops, with construction activities expected to begin soon. The renovated facilities are intended to support practical training and provide additional opportunities for young people to develop vocational skills.
Meanwhile, several educational activities have already been introduced.
Young residents have begun swimming lessons and have also participated in baking classes, where they learned how to prepare cakes and savory snacks. These activities are designed to help participants acquire useful skills while encouraging personal development, responsibility and self-confidence.
The institution is also preparing to introduce a new scouting program, with further details expected to be announced shortly.
According to the government update, these initiatives are intended to provide more than recreational activities. They form part of a broader approach to rehabilitation that emphasizes education, personal growth and the development of skills that can help young people reintegrate into society.
During the meeting, the importance of giving young offenders opportunities to rebuild their lives was emphasized.
“A mistake in the past should not define a young person's future,” the government representative stated.
The message reflects the institution's efforts to combine its responsibilities within the justice system with programs that encourage rehabilitation and personal development.
Although progress has been reported, officials acknowledged that additional work remains necessary to improve conditions and expand opportunities at JJIC.
The planned workshop renovations, existing educational activities and upcoming scouting initiative are among the measures intended to strengthen the institution's rehabilitation efforts.
The government emphasized that helping young people develop a more positive direction in life represents an investment not only in their individual futures but also in the wider Curaçao community.
The latest developments highlight the continuing efforts to ensure that young people in the juvenile justice system receive opportunities to acquire practical skills and prepare for a return to society.
