Local, Caribbean, | By Correspondent April 16, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is hosting an international conference from April 20 to 24 focused on tsunami preparedness and coastal hazards in the Caribbean, bringing together experts from across the region and beyond.

The conference is organized under the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System and includes participants from Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, the United States, France, and several Caribbean nations, as well as international organizations such as UNESCO.

Discussions during the meeting center on improving early warning systems, strengthening crisis communication, and enhancing the preparedness of coastal communities. A key objective is to promote knowledge sharing and coordination among countries to ensure faster and more effective responses to potential tsunami threats and other maritime risks.

In addition to the main conference, several side activities are being held. These include a two-day “Tsunami Ready” workshop aimed at increasing community resilience, as well as a public lecture scheduled for April 22 at the University of Curaçao. The lecture will provide residents with information on tsunami risks and preparedness measures.

By hosting the event, Curaçao highlights the importance of regional cooperation in disaster preparedness, particularly in a region where timely and effective warning systems can be critical in saving lives.
