WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government is urging Curaçao residents currently in Colombia to register online with the Dutch Embassy following a powerful earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday, killing at least 111 people.
The magnitude 7.4 earthquake had its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó. Tremors were felt in several major cities, including Medellín and Bogotá, while significant damage has also been reported in Cali, Pereira and Manizales.
Several buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquake, and rescue workers are continuing to search through the rubble for people who may still be trapped.
Colombian authorities have declared a state of emergency. According to the latest official figures cited by the Curaçao government, at least 111 people have died and another 87 have been injured.
Dozens of aftershocks had already been recorded by Monday evening, adding to concerns in the affected areas.
Curaçao Residents Asked to Register
The Curaçao government is asking residents who are currently in Colombia to register with the Information Service of NetherlandsWorldwide.
Registration allows Dutch embassies and consulates to more easily contact travelers and provide important information during emergencies such as natural disasters, political unrest or other crises.
The government is also encouraging Curaçao residents traveling or staying elsewhere abroad to use the registration service so authorities can reach them more easily if an emergency occurs.
People in Colombia who find themselves in an emergency can contact the Dutch Embassy via WhatsApp at +31 857 737 400, according to the Curaçao government.
Dutch Authorities Checking for Victims
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is investigating whether any Dutch passport holders are among the victims.
The Dutch Embassy in Bogotá is prepared to provide consular assistance to Dutch nationals in the affected areas.
Search-and-rescue operations are continuing as Colombian authorities assess the full extent of the damage and attempt to reach communities affected by the earthquake.
According to Colombian geological authorities, the magnitude 7.4 earthquake is the strongest to hit the country so far this century.
