WILLEMSTAD – The Government of Curaçao is taking important steps toward establishing a sustainable management system for Klein Curaçao, with the aim of protecting the island's natural, cultural and historical heritage while allowing responsible tourism and local economic activities.
Klein Curaçao is known for its beautiful beaches, remarkable natural environment and significant historical value. To ensure that future generations can continue enjoying this unique island, the government is developing a long-term management approach that balances conservation with sustainable development.
The objective is to protect Klein Curaçao's natural, cultural and historical resources while creating opportunities for responsible tourism and local economic activities that respect the island's fragile ecosystem.
From Research to Concrete Action
In 2025, several preparatory studies were conducted and completed with financial support from the European Union through the Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity (RESEMBID) program.
These studies resulted in reports that now form the foundation for the Klein Curaçao Development Plan.
The government is moving into the next phase, shifting its focus from research and policy preparation toward concrete actions aimed at establishing a sustainable management structure.
To coordinate this process, an interministerial working group has been established.
The working group is responsible for developing and implementing a sustainable management framework for Klein Curaçao, building on the findings and recommendations of the studies completed in 2025.
External Expert to Assist With Action Plan
To support the interministerial working group, the government has engaged an external expert to help prepare a practical and achievable Action Plan.
The plan will outline the steps necessary to establish a sustainable management structure for Klein Curaçao and translate earlier research findings into concrete measures.
Over the coming weeks, consultations will take place with various government institutions and stakeholders.
Their knowledge, experience and recommendations will be used to develop a realistic and workable plan with broad support.
The government considers stakeholder participation essential to ensuring that the proposed management framework addresses the different interests connected to the island.
Balancing Conservation and Economic Development
The government's approach seeks to establish a balance between environmental protection, the preservation of cultural and historical heritage, tourism activities and local economic development.
Klein Curaçao is more than a popular tourist destination. It is an important part of Curaçao's natural and historical heritage and requires careful management and shared responsibility.
Through cooperation, public participation and a clear long-term vision, the government aims to preserve the island's unique character while ensuring that tourism and economic activities take place responsibly.
The initiative is intended to provide a structured approach to managing Klein Curaçao, protecting its vulnerable environment and safeguarding its value for future generations.
The government has not yet announced a timeline for completing the Action Plan or implementing the proposed management structure.
