WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao government employees are now entitled to a full day off on their birthday under a new arrangement that took effect on October 1, 2026.
The Council of Ministers approved the measure on September 23, replacing the previous arrangement that granted eligible civil servants half a day off on their birthday.
According to the government, the change is intended to recognize the contribution of public employees and further promote a workplace in which staff well-being and appreciation receive greater attention.
The birthday leave can normally only be taken on the employee’s actual birthday. If the birthday falls on a weekend, public holiday, scheduled rest day, vacation day, sick day or a day on which the employee has special leave, the birthday leave cannot be saved or transferred to another date.
The arrangement is also subject to operational requirements. If an employee cannot take the day off on their birthday because their presence is required in the interest of the public service, the employee and immediate supervisor may agree on another day off within the same working week.
Minister of Governance, Planning and Public Service Shalten Hato described the expansion from half a day to a full day as another way of recognizing civil servants who serve the Curaçao community every day.
“Our public employees are the engine of our government apparatus,” Hato said. “With this gesture, we want to show appreciation for their daily commitment and dedication. An organization that values its people is an organization that can continue to grow and provide better service to our community.”
The measure applies to personnel covered by the arrangement as outlined in the official government circular and has been in effect since October 1.
