Local, | By Correspondent May 28, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Council of Ministers has approved a new plan aimed at improving the quality of special primary education in Curaçao.

The initiative focuses on training approximately 180 current teachers through a specialized certification course, while also preparing future educators through a new minor in Special Primary Education at the University of Curaçao.

According to Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Sithree “Cey” van Heydoorn of MFK, the program is intended to strengthen support for students with additional educational needs and improve overall learning outcomes.

The government says the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize and strengthen educational support systems for children requiring specialized guidance within the classroom.

The implementation phase is scheduled to run from April through December. After that period, further coordination and evaluation will take place with institutions and partners within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The plan comes amid ongoing discussions about educational quality, teacher shortages, and the growing need for specialized educational support on Curaçao.
