WILLEMSTAD – Stichting De Kunukuman will launch a new recycling initiative on Curaçao starting August 1, introducing the island’s first official collection points where residents can bring recyclable materials.
The foundation will initially open three collection locations: Grote Berg near Bali, the parking area at Waaigat in Punda, and Montaña at the school on Kaminda Venancia F. Iseria.
At these collection points, residents will be able to hand in glass, plastic bottles and aluminum cans for recycling. In return, they will receive a payment based on the weight of the materials collected.
According to De Kunukuman, the compensation rates will be ANG 1.25 per kilogram for aluminum cans, ANG 1 per kilogram for plastic bottles and ANG 0.40 per kilogram for glass.
The initiative aims to give waste a new value and encourage more residents to participate in recycling efforts. The foundation says the project is intended to contribute to a cleaner island, improved waste management and the creation of local employment opportunities.
De Kunukuman wants to work together with the government, businesses, resorts and residents to develop a more sustainable recycling system for Curaçao.
The organization believes that by making recycling accessible and rewarding, more people will be encouraged to separate waste and reduce the amount of garbage ending up in landfills.
