WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Fire Department is focusing this year's Fire Prevention Week on the safe charging of devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, warning residents that everyday charging habits can play an important role in preventing fires.
Fire Prevention Week began Sunday and continues through Saturday, October 10. Throughout the week, the Fire Department will provide information and practical advice aimed at reducing the risk of fires involving rechargeable batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in everyday electronic devices, including mobile phones, tablets and laptops. While the technology has become an essential part of daily life, the Fire Department wants residents to be aware that the batteries can also pose safety risks.
This year's campaign presents safe charging as a "superpower," emphasizing that simple habits when charging electronic devices can help make homes and the wider community safer.
The campaign is also specifically targeting children. Educational materials have been developed to teach young people how lithium-ion batteries work and help them understand the potential dangers associated with their use.
According to the Fire Department, children can also play an active role in preventing accidents by following safe practices whenever they use or charge electronic devices at home or at school.
The awareness campaign forms part of the Fire Department's broader efforts during Fire Prevention Week to encourage residents to recognize potential fire hazards and take preventive measures before an emergency occurs.
