Curaçao Fire Department Urges Residents to Install Smoke Detectors and Address Fire Hazards

Local, | By Correspondent October 26, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Fire Department is calling on residents and business owners to strengthen fire prevention measures, warning that a fire can develop within seconds and cause devastating consequences for families, businesses and property.

The appeal comes during Fire Prevention Month, as the department intensifies its efforts to raise awareness about everyday fire hazards and encourage people to take responsibility for safety in their homes and workplaces.

According to the Fire Department, preventing fires begins with identifying potential risks before they develop into dangerous situations.

Residents are encouraged to inspect their electrical appliances and installations, ensure that equipment is used safely, and eliminate conditions that could lead to a fire.

Particular attention should be given to the installation of smoke detectors, which can provide an early warning when smoke is detected. The department also recommends having a suitable fire extinguisher available and ensuring that appropriate safety measures are in place.

Business owners are similarly being urged to evaluate their premises and identify potential hazards that could threaten employees, customers and commercial property.

The department emphasized that fire prevention should not be viewed solely as the responsibility of firefighters. Instead, every member of the community has a role in identifying dangerous conditions and reducing risks.

"Every fire we can prevent means a home, a family or a life that we can protect. Prevention is the best option," the Fire Department stated.

The warning follows the release of statistics showing that fires affected 40 homes, 16 commercial establishments and three resorts between January and September 2026.

The department said these figures underscore the importance of taking preventive action rather than waiting until an emergency occurs.

As Curaçao approaches the end of the year, firefighters are encouraging households to review their safety arrangements and ensure that family members understand the potential dangers associated with electrical equipment and other fire hazards.

The Fire Department reiterated that even a seemingly minor hazard can have serious consequences if left unaddressed.

It also stressed that community safety depends on a shared commitment to prevention, awareness and timely action.

While firefighters remain responsible for responding to emergencies and combating fires, the department believes that many dangerous situations can be avoided when residents and businesses take appropriate precautions.

"A safer community begins with the responsibility and preventive actions of each one of us," the department emphasized.
