WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Fire Department is battling a major fire in the Malpais area this Wednesday, September 10, with large amounts of smoke being produced by what authorities describe as a workshop fire.
According to an important public notice issued by the Fire Department, the fire is burning along Weg naar Westpunt near Malpais. Firefighters are on the scene attempting to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading further.
Authorities are urging residents of Seru Chikí, Harmonie and surrounding neighborhoods to keep the windows and doors of their homes closed because of the heavy smoke generated by the fire.
The Fire Department has also announced that the Malpais landfill will remain closed to the public until further notice.
Images accompanying the emergency notice show a substantial column of dark smoke rising from the area as flames burn near what appears to be discarded material and tires.
The Fire Department has not yet provided information about the cause of the fire, possible injuries or the extent of the damage.
Residents are being advised to follow official government and emergency-service channels for further information as firefighters continue their efforts to control the blaze.
