Curaçao Faces Upcoming Terrorism Evaluation, Concerns Raised in Parliament

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is set to undergo an important evaluation on terrorism and financial crime compliance in May 2026, with concerns raised in Parliament about the island’s preparedness and potential risks to its international standing.

During a parliamentary session, MFK Member of Parliament Javier Silvania warned that Curaçao did not fully meet the required standards in its 2025 evaluation. He stressed the importance of reviewing recent years and making necessary improvements to secure a positive outcome in the upcoming assessment.

According to Silvania, a negative evaluation could have serious consequences, including the risk of Curaçao being placed on an international “grey list.” Such a designation could damage the island’s reputation and affect its financial system.

He noted that anti-money laundering legislation, including provisions in the Criminal Code, plays a key role in meeting international standards. Failure to comply could make it more difficult for local banks to conduct international transactions.

Silvania also pointed to broader economic implications. If Curaçao were to be placed on a grey list, it could affect everyday financial activity, including the ability of tourists to make payments using credit cards and the ease of conducting transactions abroad.

The upcoming evaluation is seen as critical for maintaining confidence in Curaçao’s financial system and safeguarding its position in the international economy.
