Curaçao Expands Regional Ties With Colombia Through Agricultural Cooperation

Local, Caribbean, | By Correspondent May 15, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s latest cooperation agreement with Colombia signals a broader strategic effort by the island to deepen economic and regional ties with South America, particularly in sectors linked to food production and sustainability.

The Curaçao government this week approved a letter of intent with Colombia’s Agencia de Desarollo Rural (ADR) as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation in food security and agriculture.

The agreement was approved during the May 13 meeting of the Council of Ministers and authorizes the Minister of Economic Development to formally sign the cooperation framework on behalf of Curaçao.

The ADR was created by the Colombian government in 2015 to promote integrated rural development, agricultural productivity, infrastructure modernization, and food security programs throughout Colombia.

For Curaçao, the agreement reflects growing interest in building stronger economic links with nearby South American markets rather than relying exclusively on traditional European and North American supply networks.

The cooperation also fits into a broader Caribbean trend in which island economies are searching for regional food solutions to reduce vulnerability to external shocks.

Curaçao imports most of its food products, making the island highly sensitive to shipping disruptions, inflation, and global commodity price increases. Government officials have repeatedly emphasized the need to increase local production and diversify food supply sources.

Colombia, with its large agricultural sector and geographic proximity to Curaçao, is increasingly viewed as a strategic partner for both food imports and agricultural expertise.

The agreement may eventually lead to cooperation in areas such as irrigation systems, agricultural technology, farmer training, logistics, fisheries, and crop development, although the government has not yet released detailed implementation plans.
