WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government plans to continue investing in protected agriculture, farming infrastructure and mechanization as part of its effort to increase local food production and strengthen food security.
The 2027 Budget Memorandum includes continued implementation of the project “Accelerated Growth of Agriculture and Livestock Farming in Curaçao,” which began in November 2025.
The program includes investments at Klein Kwartier and Soltuna-affiliated properties connected to SDKK, JJIC and Carpiles.
The government says the broader project is intended to structurally strengthen agriculture and livestock farming through infrastructure, protected cultivation, mechanization, knowledge development and more sustainable production methods.
Part of the investment will be used to construct and equip greenhouses and other protected-growing systems.
According to the budget, protected agriculture would allow farmers to grow crops under controlled conditions, reducing exposure to drought, extreme temperatures, heavy rainfall, pests and diseases.
The government also expects modern cultivation systems to make more efficient use of Curaçao’s limited water resources.
The agricultural investment complements other government initiatives aimed at improving water management and food security, including maintenance of dams and water infrastructure.
The policy comes as the government increasingly identifies Curaçao’s dependence on imported food as an economic vulnerability and seeks to expand domestic production where feasible.
