Curaçao Engaged in Kingdom-Wide Detention and Prison Reform Efforts

Local, | By Correspondent February 10, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Detention reform was another major theme of the Justice Summit, with Curaçao participating in Kingdom-wide efforts to modernize prison systems and improve conditions.

Although detention remains the responsibility of each country individually, cooperation between the four Kingdom partners is increasing. Ministers reaffirmed support for continuing the Taskforce Detentie, which facilitates knowledge exchange and implementation of best practices.

While Sint Maarten’s new Point Blanche prison received significant Dutch financial backing, the broader discussion focused on strengthening detention systems throughout the Kingdom — including Curaçao.

The ministers also discussed responses to the evaluation of the Mutual Detention Arrangement (Onderlinge Regeling Detentie), with a joint writing group to prepare coordinated follow-up measures.
