Curaçao Delegation Participates in Climate Adaptation Dialogue During IPKO

Local, Caribbean, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent June 9, 2026

THE HAGUE – Climate adaptation and citizen participation were among the topics discussed during the final day of the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO), as Curaçao's delegation joined colleagues from across the Kingdom in a special session led by the Dutch National Climate Citizens' Assembly.

The session focused on lessons learned from the Netherlands' National Climate Citizens' Assembly, a large-scale initiative that brought together 175 residents from across the country to formulate recommendations on climate policy.

Participants spent several months discussing ways to reduce climate change through more sustainable consumption, transportation and lifestyle choices before presenting their recommendations to the Dutch government and parliament.

During the IPKO session, representatives of the Climate Citizens' Assembly presented the initiative and engaged parliamentarians in discussions about public participation in policymaking.

For Curaçao, the discussion comes at a time when climate adaptation is becoming increasingly important. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, coastal erosion and extreme weather events continue to pose challenges for the island.

The session explored how citizen participation can contribute to long-term solutions and help governments build broader support for environmental policies.

Parliamentarians participated in interactive discussions and exchanged ideas about how similar approaches could potentially be adapted to the realities of the Caribbean countries.

Climate resilience has become an increasingly important topic within Kingdom relations, particularly as small island states face some of the most direct impacts of climate change despite contributing relatively little to global emissions.

The discussion formed part of IPKO's ongoing efforts to exchange best practices and explore new forms of cooperation between the countries of the Kingdom.

A seventh article could also be developed specifically on the decision to permanently reform the IPKO structure, which is a significant Kingdom governance story and has direct implications for Curaçao Parliament's future influence within the consultation process.
