THE HAGUE – As global geopolitical tensions continue to reshape international relations, Curaçao’s parliamentary delegation received a briefing on strategic security developments during a visit to the Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael.
The meeting formed part of preparations for the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO), which brings together parliamentarians from Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and the Netherlands.
Representatives of Clingendael provided the delegation with information on current geopolitical developments, international security challenges, and the strategic importance of the Caribbean islands within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The briefing comes at a time when security issues are gaining increasing prominence within Kingdom relations. Foreign affairs and defense remain Kingdom responsibilities, making them important discussion topics during IPKO meetings.
According to Parliament, the session provided valuable insights and tools for discussions on foreign policy and defense, which are scheduled to take place during the consultation.
The Caribbean region has become increasingly significant from a strategic perspective due to its location near major maritime trade routes, regional security concerns, migration challenges, and growing geopolitical competition in the wider Americas.
The official IPKO agenda includes separate working groups on security, finance, education, and foreign affairs, as well as a dialogue with Dutch State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Eric van der Burg.
The meetings are scheduled for June 5, 6, and 8 in The Hague.
