WILLEMSTAD – One of the most important periods of the year for Curaçao's coral reefs has begun, with researchers closely monitoring the waters around the island for the annual mass spawning events that provide a crucial opportunity for natural reef recovery.
CARMABI has published its 2026 coral spawning predictions, with particularly important spawning nights expected around the full moons of late August and late September.
During coral spawning, colonies release eggs and sperm into the water almost simultaneously, creating a short reproductive window that may occur only a few nights each year for certain species. Timing is influenced by factors including the lunar cycle, water temperature and sunset.
Researchers use these events not only to study coral reproduction but also to collect eggs and sperm that can be used to grow new corals for reef-restoration projects.
This year's schedule is based on observations from 2025 and more than three decades of research into coral reproduction in the southern Caribbean.
CARMABI indicated that researchers should begin monitoring slightly earlier than usual around the August full moon. Because the full moon occurred shortly after midnight on August 28, corals may have effectively received the lunar signal a night earlier.
Spawning activity is expected from several important species, including elkhorn, staghorn and pillar coral as well as different star and brain corals.
The reproductive season comes at a critical moment for Curaçao's reefs.
Researchers have observed that coral spawning does not occur equally across all areas around the island. Relatively remote, protected and healthier reefs generally continue reproducing close to the expected schedule.
Urban reefs and locations affected by pollution, overfishing and other forms of human pressure, however, show considerably less spawning activity.
Disease and coral bleaching also continued to place considerable pressure on Curaçao's corals during 2025.
That makes successful reproduction particularly important. Coral spawning produces the next generation of colonies and therefore contributes to the ability of reefs to recover after disease, bleaching and other disturbances.
Curaçao's reefs have already shown significant long-term deterioration. Previous research examined by Curaçao Chronicle has found declining coral cover and growing pressure from wastewater, coastal development and intensive human use.
The spawning season therefore offers scientists more than an opportunity to witness one of the reef's most remarkable natural events.
It also provides an indication of which reefs remain sufficiently healthy to reproduce successfully and gives restoration researchers a brief annual opportunity to collect genetic material that could help rebuild damaged coral populations.
Important spawning activity is expected to continue into September, giving researchers another critical period to monitor the reproductive health of Curaçao's reefs.
