Curaçao Cabinet Approves Instructions for Kingdom Climate Talks Ahead of COP31 in Turkey

Local, Politics, | By Correspondent November 2, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Council of Ministers has approved draft instructions for the island's Minister Plenipotentiary ahead of the October 30, 2026, meeting of the Kingdom Council of Ministers, where preparations related to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) were scheduled for discussion.

The decision was taken on Wednesday, October 28, under the responsibility of Curaçao's Ministry of General Affairs.

According to the government's announcement, the instructions concern COP31, scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey, from November 9 to 20, 2026.

The approval establishes the draft instructions to be communicated to Curaçao's Minister Plenipotentiary for the Kingdom Council of Ministers meeting.

The Kingdom Council of Ministers brings together representatives of the countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands to address matters that fall under Kingdom responsibilities.

Curaçao participates in these discussions through its Minister Plenipotentiary, who represents the country in the Kingdom's decision-making process.

The upcoming climate conference will bring together international representatives to discuss global climate policy, international cooperation and measures addressing climate change.

For Caribbean islands such as Curaçao, climate-related discussions are particularly relevant because of concerns surrounding rising temperatures, coastal vulnerability, extreme weather and long-term environmental sustainability.

The government's announcement did not disclose the contents of the approved draft instructions or specify Curaçao's intended position on individual issues expected to be discussed at COP31.

It also did not indicate whether Curaçao would send a separate delegation to the conference in Turkey.

The October 28 decision therefore concerns Curaçao's preparations for discussions within the Kingdom Council of Ministers rather than the adoption of a new national climate policy.

The government has not announced any additional measures arising from the decision.
