WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao-born filmmaker Kristen Dania has received financial support from the Netherlands Film Fund to further develop the screenplay for his first feature film, Mester Muri, a Papiamentu-language drama centered on a teenage baseball player in Curaçao.
The film follows a 16-year-old baseball player struggling with the pressures of pursuing a professional sports career while also dealing with expectations from his family.
With the financial contribution from the Netherlands Film Fund, Dania will be able to continue developing the screenplay and take another step toward bringing his first feature-length production to the screen.
The announcement comes at a particularly relevant moment for Curaçao, shortly after Pariba Little League captured the Little League World Series championship in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The historic victory has once again placed Curaçao’s strong baseball culture and young talent in the international spotlight.
While Mester Muri is a fictional drama, its story explores a reality familiar to many young baseball players on the island, where talented athletes can face significant expectations as they pursue opportunities to continue their careers abroad.
The project will be produced with the involvement of Curaçao-based production company Caribbean Filmcom and is being developed for both local and international audiences.
The decision to make the film in Papiamentu also places Curaçao’s language and culture at the center of the production, while its themes of family expectations, ambition and the pressures surrounding young athletes could resonate with audiences beyond the island.
The Film Fund contribution is intended for further screenplay development. No production or release date for Mester Muri has yet been announced.
