WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao and India are exploring opportunities to strengthen their economic and commercial relationship following a meeting between Curaçao's Minister of Finance, Charles F. Cooper, and India's Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of international financial discussions in Bangkok, Thailand, where Cooper and Sitharaman exchanged views on potential business opportunities, fiscal and economic cooperation, and ways to expand collaboration between the two countries.

According to Cooper, the discussions were positive and highlighted several areas in which Curaçao could develop closer economic ties with India.

One of the opportunities identified was Curaçao's potential role as a regional business hub for Indian companies interested in conducting commercial activities with Venezuela.

Cooper indicated that Curaçao's geographical position and fiscal framework could make the island an attractive location for Indian businesses seeking access to the Venezuelan market.

The minister suggested that Curaçao could serve as a platform for facilitating trade and investment, particularly for companies looking to establish a regional presence in the Caribbean.

Another important subject was the possibility of developing an agreement to prevent double taxation between Curaçao and India.

Such an agreement could help businesses avoid being taxed twice on the same income in the two jurisdictions, depending on the provisions negotiated. It could also provide greater tax certainty for companies operating across both markets.

Cooper expressed interest in exploring such an arrangement as part of broader efforts to encourage investment and commercial cooperation.

However, no formal agreement or commitment to begin treaty negotiations was announced following the meeting.

The ministers also discussed the Indian community in Curaçao and its longstanding contribution to the island's economic development.

Cooper highlighted the role played by Indian entrepreneurs and businesses over the years, particularly in creating employment opportunities, strengthening the commercial sector and contributing to the local economy.

The Indian community has maintained an established presence in Curaçao's business environment, making it an important connection between the island and India.

During the conversation, Cooper also informed Sitharaman about Curaçao's decision to honor Mahatma Gandhi by naming a roundabout after the Indian independence leader.

The gesture was presented as recognition of Gandhi's historical importance and his enduring legacy as an advocate of nonviolence and peaceful social change.

According to Cooper, the tribute reflects Curaçao's appreciation for a figure whose influence extends far beyond India and continues to inspire future generations.

The meeting represents an initial step toward exploring additional opportunities for cooperation between Curaçao and India.

Although no specific investment projects, trade agreements or tax treaties were announced, Cooper expressed optimism that the discussions could open doors for stronger economic relations.

Further consultations would be necessary to translate the ideas discussed into concrete agreements or initiatives benefiting businesses and investors in both countries.
