WILLEMSTAD, BRUSSELS – The Government of Curaçao and the European Union are moving forward with a series of infrastructure projects aimed at improving Otrobanda, Sapaté and Fortuna Ariba, including new sewer systems, roads, public lighting and community facilities.
The Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning (VVRP) announced that the projects will be carried out through contracts under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF). The government described the start of the works as an important new phase in cooperation between Curaçao and the European Union on essential infrastructure.
One of the most significant projects will take place in Otrobanda, where the sewer system along Breedestraat, Roodeweg and the neighborhood surrounding the mosque will be modified.
According to VVRP, the area currently uses a combined system in which sewage and rainwater are transported together. The new infrastructure will separate the two, sending wastewater through the sewage treatment system while rainwater will be discharged separately into the sea.
Another project will transform the small square near the Scheidelaar gas station. Plans include the construction or installation of sidewalks, benches, playground equipment and other improvements to the public space.
In Sapaté, the government plans to improve public lighting and replace the asphalt surface. The neighborhood previously received a community center as part of projects financed through the 10th EDF. Under the new program, additional work will include playground facilities for children and landscaping improvements.
Fortuna Ariba will also receive substantial investment. Public housing foundation FKP is expected to construct homes in the area, while VVRP will be responsible for infrastructure including sewerage, sidewalks and asphalt roads. The ministry also plans to construct a multifunctional community center.
The government said the approval of the contracts provides an important boost for Curaçao and clears the way for infrastructure projects expected to have a positive impact on the affected communities.
VVRP Minister Charles Cooper said the milestone follows extensive cooperation among the parties involved. He indicated that more work remains before implementation is completed but expressed confidence that continued cooperation with local and international partners will allow the projects to move forward successfully.
The projects are part of the longstanding development cooperation between Curaçao and the European Union through the European Development Fund, with the latest investments focusing heavily on neighborhood infrastructure and improvements to residents’ living environment.
