Curaçao and Colombia Sign Cooperation Agreement on Food Security and Agriculture

Local, Caribbean, | By Correspondent May 15, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao and Colombia are moving toward closer cooperation on food security and agricultural development following approval of a new memorandum of understanding by the Curaçao government.

The Council of Ministers approved a “Carta de Intención,” or letter of intent, between Curaçao and Colombia’s Agencia de Desarollo Rural (ADR) , the Colombian Rural Development Agency responsible for promoting agricultural and rural development projects across Colombia.

The agreement focuses on food security, agricultural development, and technical cooperation between both parties. The Minister of Economic Development has been authorized to sign the agreement on behalf of Curaçao.

According to the ADR, the Colombian agency supports rural producers through agricultural development programs, technical assistance, infrastructure projects, and food production initiatives aimed at strengthening food sovereignty and improving rural economies. (Adr)

The agreement comes at a time when Curaçao is seeking to diversify food supply chains and strengthen regional cooperation to reduce dependence on imported goods.

Colombia has increasingly become an important trading and logistical partner for Curaçao due to its geographic proximity and large agricultural sector. The cooperation could potentially create opportunities for technical exchanges, agricultural training, supply agreements, and joint food production initiatives.

Across the Caribbean, food security has become a strategic priority as governments face rising import costs, climate-related disruptions, and vulnerability to global supply chain shocks.

Colombia’s ADR has recently expanded programs focused on rural food production, farmer support, agricultural logistics, and direct supply chains linking producers to consumers.
