WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao and Aruba are moving toward closer cooperation on veterinary matters and the importation of beef from Colombia following the Curaçao government's approval of a draft memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
The Council of Ministers approved the proposed agreement on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following a submission from the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN).
The memorandum is intended to establish cooperation between Aruba and Curaçao in addressing veterinary matters related to the importation of Colombian beef.
According to the government's official announcement, the agreement provides a framework for a joint approach and cooperation between the two Caribbean countries.
The Council of Ministers also authorized Curaçao's Minister of Health, Environment and Nature to sign the draft memorandum on behalf of the country.
The decision represents a step toward formalizing cooperation on veterinary oversight and the importation of meat products from Colombia.
Veterinary controls play an important role in international meat trade, particularly in ensuring that imported products comply with applicable animal health and food safety requirements.
Cooperation between importing countries can facilitate the exchange of information and coordination of veterinary procedures, although the government has not yet specified which measures will be included in the agreement.
The announcement did not provide details about possible import volumes, participating Colombian exporters, inspection arrangements, or a timetable for implementing the cooperation.
It also did not indicate whether the proposed agreement would result in changes to existing import requirements or procedures.
The approval authorizes the Curaçao minister to sign the memorandum but does not, by itself, establish that new beef shipments have been approved or that import conditions have changed.
Further information about the practical implementation of the agreement is expected to become available following its formal signing by the participating authorities.
