PORT OF SPAIN – Curaçao secured a place in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League on Sunday evening after a 1-1 draw against Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain.
Dick Advocaat’s team entered the match looking to complete a strong Nations League campaign and created several opportunities during the first half.
Jordi Paulina and Kenji Gorré both came close to opening the scoring, while Leandro Bacuna headed narrowly wide from a corner. Juninho Bacuna also had an opportunity to put Curaçao ahead.

Despite Curaçao’s promising start, Trinidad and Tobago took the lead in the 40th minute.
A pass through the center of the Curaçao defense released striker Luke Philip, who remained composed in a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Eloy Room and slipped the ball underneath him for the 1-0 advantage.
Curaçao appeared to have equalized shortly afterward, but the goal was disallowed for offside, allowing the home side to take its lead into halftime.
Paulina Scores Equalizer
Curaçao increased the pressure after the break in search of an equalizer.
Jearl Margaritha forced the Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper into a difficult save with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area. Gorré also had another opportunity as Curaçao continued pushing forward.
The breakthrough finally came in the 62nd minute.
A low cross was played across goal toward the far post, where Paulina was positioned to finish from close range and make it 1-1.
The match became increasingly open after the equalizer, with both teams searching for another goal.
Trinidad and Tobago created more opportunities during the closing stages and put Curaçao under sustained pressure, making it increasingly difficult for Advocaat’s team to move out of its own half.
Curaçao nevertheless had a major opportunity in stoppage time from a rehearsed free-kick routine, but the Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper produced an excellent save to keep the score level.
Strong Nations League Campaign
The 1-1 result was enough to guarantee Curaçao a place in the Nations League quarterfinals.
Curaçao’s final position in the group remains dependent on Haiti’s result. A Haitian victory could leave Curaçao in second place, which would affect its opponent in the quarterfinals.
The qualification follows an impressive series of results for the Blue Wave. Curaçao defeated Costa Rica 4-3 and recorded a commanding 6-1 victory over Nicaragua. Advocaat’s team also defeated Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in Willemstad on Thursday before Sunday’s return encounter.
Attendance at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain was notably low, with less than 20 percent of the stadium filled at kickoff.
The Curaçao national team is scheduled to return directly to the island following the match.
