Criminal Infiltration Prompts Integrity Overhaul at Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard

Local, Venezuela, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent June 9, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Recent drug-related arrests, convictions and disciplinary actions involving Coast Guard personnel have prompted the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard to launch an extensive integrity reform program.

The disclosure was made by Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius in response to questions from members of the Dutch Parliament regarding the Coast Guard's Integrity Urgency Plan 2025.

According to the minister, the plan was developed after several confirmed integrity incidents within the organization. These included criminal arrests and convictions linked to drug smuggling and trafficking, as well as disciplinary measures and suspensions involving Coast Guard employees.

The minister confirmed that criminal networks played a role in the cases, raising concerns about attempts by organized crime groups to infiltrate security and law enforcement institutions in the Caribbean.

The revelations underscore the challenges faced by agencies operating in a region that remains a major corridor for international narcotics trafficking.

The Coast Guard has indicated that the incidents have led to a review of its integrity framework and the introduction of stronger preventive measures designed to reduce vulnerabilities to corruption and criminal influence.

The development is likely to attract attention in Curaçao, where authorities have repeatedly warned about the growing sophistication and financial power of international drug trafficking organizations operating throughout the Caribbean.
