WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Revitalization Foundation (CRF) is calling for greater attention to the preservation and redevelopment of historic squares and public spaces in downtown Willemstad.
The issue was discussed Tuesday during a meeting between CRF chairman Luigi Chavarria and Governor Mauritsz de Kort.
During the visit, Chavarria presented several of the foundation’s projects and initiatives aimed at revitalizing the capital’s urban environment and protecting Curaçao’s cultural heritage.
Special attention was given to iconic locations such as Julianaplein and Plasa Horacio Hoyer, which CRF says are important parts of Curaçao’s history and identity.
According to the foundation, public spaces in the city center should once again play a stronger role as gathering places for residents and communities.
The discussions with the governor therefore focused on ways these historic squares could contribute more to social interaction, community connection, and the overall livability of Willemstad.
The meeting also addressed possible cooperation surrounding the government’s recently established vision framework for the inner city.
An important topic during the discussions was the further greening of public spaces in Willemstad. According to CRF, increasing greenery within the city center could help create a more attractive, sustainable, and future-oriented urban environment.
The foundation believes revitalized public areas can strengthen both the cultural character and social vitality of the UNESCO-listed historic city center.
