Consumer Group Warns of Confusion Over Funeral and Life Insurance Policies

| By Correspondent March 4, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Many consumers in Curaçao do not fully understand the differences and conditions associated with funeral and life insurance policies, according to Fundashon pa Konsumidó. The consumer advocacy organization issued the warning following a number of complaints from policyholders who reported confusion about coverage and payouts.

According to the foundation, several consumers recently contacted the organization with questions and concerns about insurance plans they had taken out. In response, Fundashon pa Konsumidó reached out to insurance companies to obtain clarification about the products currently being offered.

A funeral insurance policy is specifically designed to cover the costs of a funeral. When the insured person passes away, the agreed amount is paid either to the designated beneficiary or directly to the funeral service provider to cover burial expenses.

Life insurance policies, however, can take several forms. One type pays out when the insured person reaches a specified age, while another provides financial protection for relatives in the event of the insured person’s death. That type of life insurance is not necessarily intended to cover funeral costs.

According to the consumer organization, many policyholders do not clearly distinguish between these types of insurance. As a result, expectations about coverage sometimes do not match the actual terms of the policy.

Fundashon pa Konsumidó also stressed the importance of completing the health declaration accurately and honestly when applying for insurance. Providing incorrect or incomplete information can lead to problems when a claim is made.

The organization is advising consumers to carefully review policy conditions before signing. Particular attention should be given to age or health restrictions, exclusions, waiting periods, and the potential consequences of missed premium payments.
