Consumer Foundation Finds Major Price Differences for Meat Ahead of Curaçao's World Cup Matches

WILLEMSTAD – Consumers preparing to watch Curaçao's World Cup matches with family and friends could save significantly on their grocery bills by shopping around, according to a new price comparison conducted by the Fundashon pa Konsumidó (FPK), Curaçao's Consumer Foundation.

The organization compared the prices of 30 popular meat and chicken products commonly used for barbecues, soups, and other meals that are often enjoyed during football matches.

According to FPK, the survey was carried out to help consumers identify the most affordable options as excitement builds around Curaçao's participation in the FIFA World Cup.

Price Differences Exceed NAf 20 Per Kilogram

The comparison found substantial price variations between supermarkets. For some products, the difference between stores exceeded NAf 20 per kilogram, highlighting the potential savings available to shoppers willing to compare prices before making purchases.

FPK noted that the Centrum supermarket chain offered one of the largest selections of meat products included in the survey, with 27 of the 30 items available. The chain also recorded the lowest prices for the majority of the products examined.

Mangusa and Bon Bini supermarkets were also identified as among the more affordable shopping options for consumers.

World Cup Gatherings Drive Demand

The Consumer Foundation said the survey was motivated by the expectation that many residents will gather at home to watch Curaçao's World Cup matches together.

As a result, demand for barbecue meats, chicken products, and ingredients for family meals is expected to increase during the tournament.

By providing consumers with comparative pricing information, FPK hopes to help households manage food expenses while enjoying the matches.

Price, Not Quality

FPK emphasized that the study focused exclusively on retail prices and did not evaluate product quality, brand differences, or country of origin.

The organization noted that purchasing decisions may involve additional factors beyond price, but the comparison was intended to give consumers a clearer picture of where they can find the most economical options.

With World Cup fever spreading across the island, the Consumer Foundation is encouraging shoppers to compare prices before filling their carts, as small differences on individual products can translate into significant savings for larger gatherings and match-day celebrations.
