Concerns Grow Over Use of False Flags in International Shipping

| By Correspondent March 23, 2026

THE HAGUE – The use of false flags by oil tankers has raised renewed concerns about maritime safety and regulatory compliance, following the case of a vessel operating through Curaçao.

Dutch authorities confirmed that the tanker MT Regina was sailing under a fraudulent flag, a violation of international maritime law. The issue has drawn attention to broader risks associated with ships attempting to obscure their identity.

Officials emphasized that such practices undermine global maritime safety standards and complicate enforcement efforts. However, they also noted that port inspections remain an effective tool to identify and address such violations.

The case has prompted discussions about strengthening monitoring systems and improving international cooperation in maritime enforcement.
