Colombia's President-Elect Suspends Transition After Petro Rejects Election Outcome

BOGOTÁ – Colombia's presidential transition has been thrown into uncertainty after President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella announced the immediate suspension of the handover process with the outgoing administration of President Gustavo Petro, accusing the current government of undermining the country's constitutional order.

De la Espriella made the announcement after Petro publicly declared that he does not recognize the legitimacy of the incoming government, insisting that the president-elect "did not win the elections" and repeating allegations of electoral fraud without presenting evidence.

In a statement posted on social media, De la Espriella said he had instructed Vice President-elect José Manuel Restrepo to suspend all transition meetings with what he described as the "corrupt outgoing government."

"My duty is to protect the interests of the nation and guarantee a serious, transparent transition that serves Colombians, not to legitimize the disregard for the constitutional order," the president-elect said.

The dispute follows weeks of growing political tensions after Colombia's June 21 presidential runoff election. Petro has repeatedly claimed the election was affected by fraud and has argued that his preferred candidate, Senator Iván Cepeda, was the rightful winner, despite Colombia's electoral authorities certifying De la Espriella's victory. International election observers, including missions from the European Union and the Carter Center, have also validated the electoral process.

The transition process had formally begun last week through meetings between representatives of the outgoing and incoming administrations. However, Tuesday's scheduled session did not take place after the president-elect's team withdrew from the process.

The political standoff has intensified concerns over Colombia's democratic transition ahead of the scheduled inauguration on August 7. De la Espriella has accused Petro of attempting to destabilize the transfer of power, while members of the outgoing government have rejected those accusations.

Despite the escalating rhetoric, Petro later stated that he intends to hand over power on August 7 in accordance with Colombia's Constitution, while maintaining his allegations that irregularities affected the election.
