WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao's Minister of Health, Environment and Nature, Tyron Boekhoudt, says his recent visit to Colombia is already producing promising results, with several Colombian doctors and medical specialists expressing interest in relocating to Curaçao to work in the island's healthcare sector.

According to the minister, he has received positive responses from various physicians and specialists who are willing to come to Curaçao and help strengthen healthcare services on the island.

Boekhoudt announced that he will soon meet with Curaçao's medical specialists platform to discuss how the support offered during his trip to Colombia can be integrated into the local healthcare system. The discussions will focus on increasing specialist capacity at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) as well as other healthcare institutions across the island.

The minister's visit to Colombia was aimed at expanding cooperation in the healthcare sector and exploring opportunities to address some of Curaçao's ongoing challenges, including shortages of medical specialists and long waiting lists for certain treatments.

During the visit, Boekhoudt held meetings with Colombian health authorities and representatives of medical institutions to discuss potential partnerships, knowledge exchange, and opportunities for specialist recruitment.

The interest from Colombian healthcare professionals comes at a time when Curaçao continues to face staffing shortages in several medical fields. Healthcare officials have repeatedly highlighted the need to attract additional specialists to meet growing demand and improve access to care for patients.

According to Boekhoudt, the willingness of Colombian specialists to work in Curaçao could provide valuable support to the island's healthcare system and help reduce pressure on existing medical staff.

The upcoming discussions with local specialists will determine how the collaboration can move forward and what steps will be required to facilitate the arrival of additional doctors and specialists from Colombia.

The minister believes the initiative could contribute significantly to strengthening healthcare services on the island while fostering closer cooperation between Curaçao and Colombia in the medical sector.

Further details regarding the potential recruitment of Colombian specialists are expected following consultations with local healthcare stakeholders and medical institutions.
