Coast Guard Helicopter Evacuates 79-Year-Old American Tourist After Heart Attack Aboard Cruise Ship

Caribbean, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent October 29, 2026

ORANJESTAD – The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard carried out an emergency medical evacuation on Tuesday evening, October 27, after a 79-year-old American tourist suffered a heart attack aboard a cruise ship sailing at a considerable distance from Aruba.

The emergency operation was coordinated by the Coast Guard's Maritime Operations Center after receiving a distress call from the cruise ship requesting urgent medical assistance for the passenger.

Following consultation with a physician from CITRO, the situation was assessed as critical, requiring immediate medical intervention and evacuation to a hospital.

Because the cruise ship was navigating far from Aruba, the Coast Guard decided to deploy one of its helicopters to carry out the rescue mission.

The helicopter crew successfully reached the vessel and evacuated the elderly passenger, accompanied by the cruise ship's doctor, to Queen Beatrix International Airport in Aruba.

An ambulance team was waiting at the airport to receive the patient and transport him to a hospital for further medical treatment.

The operation required coordination between the Coast Guard, medical personnel and emergency services on Aruba to ensure that the patient could be transferred as quickly and safely as possible.

Medical evacuations at sea present particular challenges when vessels are located far from shore, especially when patients experience life-threatening medical emergencies requiring immediate hospital care.

In this case, the Coast Guard helicopter provided the necessary connection between the cruise ship and emergency medical facilities on Aruba.

The Coast Guard expressed its appreciation to all organizations and personnel involved in the operation, highlighting their cooperation, communication and professionalism throughout the emergency response.

According to the Coast Guard, the coordinated efforts helped ensure the safe evacuation of the American tourist.

No further information has been released about the patient's condition following his transfer to the hospital.
