Coast Guard Battles Shortage of Intelligence Specialists Amid Fight Against Drug Trafficking

Local, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent June 9, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard is facing a shortage of intelligence analysts and investigators at a time when authorities are seeking to strengthen intelligence-led operations against drug trafficking and other cross-border crimes.

The issue emerged in answers provided by Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius to questions from the Dutch Parliament about the Coast Guard's 2026 operational plan.

According to the minister, the Coast Guard intends to become a more intelligence-driven organization, but success depends heavily on recruiting and retaining specialized personnel. The agency acknowledged that analysts and investigators are in short supply throughout the region and plans to implement targeted recruitment and training programs to address the problem.

The challenge comes as the Dutch Caribbean remains a strategic transit route for narcotics moving from South America toward North America and Europe. Curaçao, Aruba and the other islands continue to play a critical role in regional maritime surveillance and interdiction efforts.

Authorities say improved intelligence gathering and analysis are essential for identifying trafficking patterns, supporting investigations and targeting criminal organizations operating in Caribbean waters.

The Coast Guard's efforts form part of broader regional cooperation involving the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Caribbean partners and the United States in combating transnational organized crime.
