WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) recently welcomed a team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as part of a collaborative mission to strengthen radiation safety and enhance the island's healthcare preparedness.
The visit was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) and the Curaçao Fire Department's Fire and Disaster Response Unit.
During the mission, the IAEA specialists provided training on the detection of radioactive materials, helping local professionals improve their ability to identify and safely respond to potential radiological hazards.
The delegation also toured CMC's Radiology and Radiation Oncology departments as part of a national inventory of radioactive sources and X-ray equipment. The assessment is intended to ensure that radioactive materials and imaging equipment used across Curaçao are properly documented and managed in accordance with international safety standards.
According to CMC, the collaboration reflects the hospital's ongoing commitment to patient safety, high-quality healthcare and international cooperation.
The hospital said the mission also contributes to strengthening Curaçao's overall preparedness and reinforces partnerships with international organizations dedicated to promoting the safe and secure use of nuclear and radiation technologies in medicine.
