CHATA calls for strategic reset as Curaçao tourism reaches turning point

| By Correspondent March 23, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s tourism sector has reached a critical juncture, with industry leaders warning that continued growth must now be carefully managed to ensure long-term sustainability and quality.

The Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association (CHATA) is calling for a strategic reorientation of the island’s tourism development, stating that the sector must reassess both the pace and direction of its expansion.

According to CHATA, Curaçao has experienced several years of strong tourism growth, driven by rising visitor numbers, expanded airlift, and increasing international interest in the destination. Industry indicators point to sustained demand and a solid competitive position within the Caribbean.

At the same time, the association notes that the island is entering a new phase, with significant additional capacity expected in the coming years. Multiple hospitality projects—including new hotels, apartment complexes, and residential developments—are already underway or in the planning stages, further increasing accommodation options for visitors.

While CHATA fully supports continued growth, it stresses that this next stage requires a more balanced and strategic approach. Key concerns include the availability of skilled labor, the capacity of infrastructure, and the long-term positioning of Curaçao as a destination.

The organization argues that without careful planning, rapid expansion could put pressure on both the tourism product and the broader community. Ensuring that growth benefits the local population and maintains the quality of the visitor experience is seen as essential.

CHATA is therefore urging stakeholders to take the time to reassess current strategies and align future development with sustainable principles. According to the association, this moment presents an opportunity to secure balanced growth that strengthens the sector while safeguarding Curaçao’s unique appeal.
