Census 2023 Reveals Uneven Car Ownership Across Curaçao Households

Local, | By Correspondent April 20, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Car ownership on Curaçao varies widely, with nearly a quarter of households having no access to a vehicle while a significant share owns multiple cars, according to new data from the 2023 Census published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

The figures show that 23.3 percent of households on the island do not own a car at all, highlighting a substantial group that depends entirely on alternative forms of transportation. At the same time, 23.6 percent of households own two cars, while 7.9 percent have three or more vehicles.

The largest segment of the population, 45.2 percent, owns a single car, confirming that car ownership remains the norm for most households on Curaçao.

The data illustrates a clear divide in mobility across the island. While many households have access to one or more vehicles, a notable portion of the population must rely on public transport, shared rides, or other means to meet daily transportation needs.

The findings are expected to contribute to ongoing discussions about mobility, infrastructure, and access to transportation, particularly in relation to economic inequality and urban planning on Curaçao.
